Understanding the eSIM Technology Stack

The eSIM ecosystem is built on a layered technical architecture that most travel guides never explain. Understanding this architecture helps travelers make more informed decisions about which providers and plans will actually deliver the connectivity experience they need.

At the hardware level, an eSIM is a small chip soldered directly to your device's motherboard. This chip stores carrier profiles — essentially encrypted configuration files that tell your device how to connect to a specific network. The GSMA's SGP.22 standard defines how these profiles are structured, downloaded, and managed.

Above the hardware layer sits the SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus) server infrastructure, operated by the eSIM provider. When you purchase a plan and scan a QR code, your device contacts this server to download the carrier profile. The security of this transaction is governed by the GSMA's Remote SIM Provisioning specification.

The network layer — the actual mobile infrastructure you connect to — is typically operated by a separate entity from the eSIM provider. Understanding this separation is key to evaluating provider quality: the eSIM provider controls the provisioning experience, but the underlying network quality depends on their carrier partnerships.

An eSIM is a reprogrammable chip soldered to the device motherboard. An iSIM (integrated SIM) takes this further by integrating SIM functionality directly into the device's main processor. iSIM is still emerging in consumer devices but represents the next evolution of the technology.

Network steering is the process by which a roaming device selects which local network to connect to. eSIM providers configure preferred network lists in their profiles, which determines which carrier your device connects to in each country. Can eSIM profiles be deleted and reinstalled? +
